Rabin Square

Rabin Square is now one of the most visited of Israeli sites. The square was formerly called the Kings of Israel Square, a large public space in the center of Tel Aviv and site of numerous parades, rallies and other events. It was renamed in 1995 after the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin which happened in the square on November 4 that year. The Prime Minister was present at a peace rally when he was shot. In the days following his assassination many thousands of Israelis gathered at the square to commemorate Rabin, and the young people who came to mourn were known as the ‘Candles Youth’. A memorial stands where Rabin was assassinated at the northeast of the square, part of which is a small open wall dedicated to Rabin. At the southern end of the square stands a sculpture commemorating the Holocaust, designed by Israeli artist Yigal Tumarkin.

The city hall building stands towards the north of the square with Frishman Street to the south and Hen Boulevard to the west. The square is a much visited stopping off point on a tour of Israel.
